Pikitup loaders causing frustration in Roosevelt Park

Pikitup pledges to ensure loading procedures are adhered to after Roosevelt Park residents complain about rough and careless handling of bins.

Andries van Eck has had enough of Pikitup refuse collectors handling the black bins carelessly.

Van Eck said, “On this last occasion, I heard a loud bang outside. I went to investigate and a bin had been carelessly dropped by the truck. This is the kind of mishandling of our bins that leads to damage.”

He said the neighbourhood’s pavements were wide and there was no reason why the bins should be left to obstruct the road. “This is a very busy street and has obstacles in motorists’ way,” he added.

He lives on 5th Avenue in Roosevelt Park and contacted Northcliff Melville Times to see if anything could be done as this was an ongoing problem.

Another resident Ayesha Patel claimed, “In the last month, both of my bins were cracked by Pikitup after they were finished. This was on two separate occasions.”

Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe said, “In this case, we will address these concerns with the team and the responsible supervisor to ensure behavioural changes. Such behaviour has negative cost implications for Pikitup and causes reputational harm. The company will continue to educate employees about this issue to bring about behavioural changes about bin handling.

“The procedure we use is a stack method for the collection of bins. One loader moves ahead of the truck to collect or stack the bins before the waste is loaded into the vehicle. Once the bins are emptied into the truck, one loader usually returns the bins to owners or places them outside of residents’ yards.
“The loaders must ensure the bins are returned to the relevant address working jointly with team leaders. However, due to the tight waste collection schedules and the fact that in some areas bins are stacked in one place by bin cleaners, this is not always possible.”

He advised residents to mark their bins to make it easier for them to be returned to the correct address.

“If the bins are not returned or are miss-handled, residents can contact the relevant supervisor or the depot to register their complaints.”
