Ward 86 councillor Chantelle Fourie-Shawe hopes municipal pool will reopen before the swimming season ends

An electrical switch has been ordered by the city but no timelines are provided for when the facility will re-open to the public.

Remember lazy summers spent hanging out at the public swimming pool? Albertskroon residents are denied this pleasure because their municipal pool is closed to the public due to ongoing problems with the pump.

As a result, the now pea-green water is unable to circulate or be filtered and, sadly for residents, the municipality is unable to say when the pool will be reopened.

Ward 86 councillor Chantelle Fourie-Shaw said, “I have visited the pool and am saddened that residents are unable to make use of this facility during the hot weather. I hope this will be resolved before the end of the swimming season.

She said Eskom’s unreliable power supply is to blame for the breakdown of the automatic pump switch, which is the cause of all the problems.

Spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Nthatisi Modingoane agreed. “The switch gear on the distribution board of the filter room is not working. It needs to be replaced as it cannot be operated manually.”

He said a work order has been generated, a contractor allocated and an electrician is attending to the problem. “This matter has been escalated and is being dealt with as an emergency.”

Once the switch has been replaced, the pool water will need to be cleaned, filtered, and stabilised before it can reopen to the public.

“The community will be advised as soon as it is safe to use again,” said Modingoane.
