JMPD provides an overview of operations in Region B for February

The metro police specifically call for illegal traffic pointsmen to desist from working during power outages.

With the increase in gang violence in Westbury and other parts of Joburg, JMPD said its resources have been stretched thin.

“Attending funerals, especially at Westpark Cemetery has become a large part of our function to avoid gang-related violence,” said JMPD Superintendent Raymond Mamitela.

At a community meeting held recently, Mamitela confirmed that Metro police had policed 232 funerals in February. “The number has increased significantly following the unrest in Westbury and other hotspot areas. Our intention is to ensure the safety of the public at these events where outbursts of gang warfare can spark easily.”

Despite resource constraints, Mamitela informed community members of other operations the department had conducted during that period.

They were:

1) Roadside checks – 100
2) Joint operations with other law enforcement – 90
3) Vehicles stopped – 4 220
4) Vehicles searched – 3 559
5) Persons searched – 3 772
6) Citations – 1 998
7) IVSD (Integrated Visible Service Delivery) – 11
8) Impoundments – perishable 21, and non-perishable 3
9) Arrests – 15
10) Complaints attended – 198
11) Accidents recorded – 82
12) Places visited – 718
13) Funeral policing – 232.
