The Witwatersrand Embroiderers Guild members are looking forward to resuming their weekly meetups in January and are hoping for new faces to join them.

Formed in 1978, the guild is an informal and fun way to enjoy spending time with others while you embroider and is open to beginners and those who stitch brilliantly.

Danny Wimpey, chair of the guild said, “We are always hoping for new members to join us and grow our community. Some members are obviously very skilled after decades of practice, but new stitchers are so important too, and it’s a joy to watch them develop their passion and skill in this timeless hobby.”

The guild held its inaugural market in Linden at the end of last year to celebrate the community and display beautiful works of art created by talented stitchers.

The most striking piece on display, titled ‘Through the eye of the needle’, is a frieze composed of individual pieces stitched during the lockdown.

The guild’s oldest member is 101 with Laura Tyrer being one of the youngest who enjoys freehand stitching without using formal patterns, so any style of preference is catered for.

Meetings are held at the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre on Saturday afternoons and Tuesday mornings with a nominal fee of R300 for the year.
