UJ arsonists receives his sentence

The man who was found guilty of arson will spend eight years in jail.

The University of Johannesburg arsonist was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. This is following sentencing on December 2.

The Northcliff Melville Times had previously reported on the August 15 crime, after the 31-year-old arsonist set an office block alight at the Bunting campus, pouring petrol over the furniture.

The damages are said to have amounted to close to R1 million. Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff thanked Detective Constable Tsundzuka Pheteni Makhubele, the case’s investigating officer for her hard work and dedication.

“She was on the scene just after the incident happened and SAPS had been informed. All necessary role players were called to ensure that all the evidence was collected,” said Backhoff.

She added that Makhubele started to work on the case immediately, with all statements taken properly and she also stayed at the scene until all evidence was collected.
