Sparrow staff get a wellness day

The organisation hosted an all-encompassing day of health and fun.

Despite the tough times we’ve all experienced in the past few years, wellness still takes a backseat for most of us.

That’s why Sparrow schools decided to take a day to tend to the health and vitality of their staff themselves.

The social worker at Sparrow Schools Educational Trust, Boipelo Mbu said to make this day a success they enlisted the assistance of the Department of Health and other financial external stakeholders to give health talks as well as financial education to Sparrow employees.

A tug-of-war game is played at Sparrow Schools.

The day was not all talk, however, as a fun element to the day was added in the form of some healthy competition. As Sparrow is an organisation with different schools, staff from each of these competed against each other through various sports activities.

Mbu such days bring, along with teambuilding, a holistic concept too, “We just want to make sure that our staff are in a good state of wellbeing. It has been a tough year for them so far and we want to use such days as a way of getting them to relax and connect with fellow employees because wellness is about social connectedness, nutrition and physical health.”

The organisation has held these events before only those times it was geared towards their learners. Based on the success of those previous events it was a no-brainer that staff would quite enjoy themselves too. “We also always make sure to cater to our learners, and at times forget our staff, but we just want to make sure that the wellbeing department includes everyone, both learners and staff,” said Mbu.

As a social worker at the organisation her aim is to make sure she is of help to everyone, so it is important to her that the staff know that within the organisation, this is a function they can utilise should they need to.

Mbu hoped the staff left the day feeling fulfilled in all aspects, from knowing about their health better, to being more connected to their fellow colleague.
