Community members save a house from burning down

Police stations along with a private security firm lead the fight to make sure this home was not completely destroyed by the fire.

The Sophiatown community came together to help put out a fire at a residence.

According to Jeanette Backhoff, spokesperson of Brixton Police Station, a call came through to her on October 6 from a resident informing her of a fire at a residence which at the time had no inside.

“With the assistance of Jonathan Thompson, the CPF vice chairperson of Brixton SAPS the necessary role-players were contacted for assistance,” she explained.

Backhoff said on arrival at the scene it was found that the neighbours and other concerned residents in the area, together with members of Tau Security were assisting in carrying buckets of water to keep the flames under control while waiting for the fire brigade. “They managed to save the house from going up in flames and only the lapa next to the house was burned to ashes.”

The spokesperson also explained that some private security guards on the scene even jumped into the swimming pool to get water to help stop the fire. This a necessary undertaking as there is currently no water in the area.

“It is amazing to see how a community can stand together in a crisis and work hand in hand,” said Backhoff. “Captain TJ De Bruyn from Sophiatown SAPS and myself want to thank each and every member of the community who was involved. This is an example of what it means to stand together as a community,” she said.

She concluded to commend the Brixton fire brigade for their quick response and hard work and dedication.
