International Literacy Day at De La Salle Holy Cross College

The school recently observed International Literacy Day and through it they asserted why literacy is so important through their Grade 7s.

At De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School, while Grade 6s stepped outside to write messages on the pavement in promotion of reading, the Grade 7 class found themselves in the library where they were affectionately read to.

Observed on September 8, International Literacy Day is said to highlight the importance of literacy all while raising awareness of the literacy problems and the impact on children globally. The school said it serves as a reminder to the international community that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning.

The school encourages its learners to read extensively and be provided with a supportive reading environment, this tied in well with this year’s theme to the day which was ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.’

Vangy Dugmore, a retired languages teacher and deputy head, who has dedicated her time to raising awareness of literacy in an effort to eradicate poverty, visited the school’s Umphakathi Centre, the library, where she read to pupils and discussed the importance of literacy with them.

Described as an avid reader herself, Dugmore enjoys researching and introducing age-appropriate reading material to young people. She inspires the youth to get involved in community projects and uplift our beautiful country through literacy. Her message to learners is “Reading is for enjoyment; it is for pleasure. More importantly, it is to get us out of poverty and that’s what’s important – education is important.”
