As part of the Wits centenary celebrations, students of musical theatre put on a show-stopping performance.

As part of Wits University’s centenary celebrations, the theatre department performed a wonderful play, Lerumo Badimong Spear in the land of the Gods – a Musical.

The Wits main theatre in the performing arts complex was packed with lovers of theatre from the community, students and several hopefuls who were at the university for auditions.

The musical was devised and performed by Wits University musical theatre students and was directed by Sibu Mkhize and Mocketsi Kgotle.

The play is an African story set in a fictional world and tells the tale of deities at war. The war is embodied and reflected in the actions of the people on earth.

A proudly African tale which incorporated several languages made for exciting viewing, even for those who did not understand every word. The use of music, body language and tone enabled the viewer to participate fully.

The performance was a visual spectacle with the actors using their bodies as props, filling the space with dance and using their voices as tools of expression.

Unlike many productions, the music was played live and in full view of the audience, adding another level of interest during moments when the actors were less active.

A takeaway sentence from the performance is, ‘Nothing of yours can be truly stolen. Everything that is yours, no matter how far, will come full circle… Ngeke balibuse’
