Planting trees at Reddford House Northcliff

The school spent a morning giving back to the earth by planting trees.

It’s said that early spring is the ideal time to plant trees and Reddford House Northcliff heeded the call to do just that.

On September 1, dressed in their best seasonally inspired outfits, the school’s youngest members spent part of their morning planting viburnums and a fig tree.

Shaun Hansel, the school’s deputy head, expressed his delight that the day was warmer than previous years and they could enjoy it as intended.

“We are planting trees today and we have everyone out celebrating spring dressed in their colourful clothes, something floral,” he said.

Hansel added the day was about the celebration of trees and the educational element to it which entailed speaking to the children about the importance of planting trees and what they meant to our environment. “Also to educate them that planting trees is a long-term goal, we plant now so that in time we can enjoy the shade from that.”

The tree planting coincided with Arbour Week which is celebrated in the first week of September annually. Last year, the school planted pansies and this time they decided to plant trees.

From that day, Hansel hoped the children took with them a love for nature and a desire to go home and ask mom and dad if their family can also plant a tree. “Spending time together in the garden and maybe even planting vegetables too, showing children that these [vegetables] do not come from a packet.”
