A song 100 years in the making

Wits student shares on what went behind creating the Wits song.

A lot went into making sure Wits Homecoming weekend – three days of celebrating the institution’s 100th year – was the success it was envisaged to be.

Adding to the celebrations was the ‘Wits Song’ created by one of its own, honours student Zenaye Skosana who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts in dramatic arts. She was inspired to create the song For Good.

The student shared what went behind composing this song and its significance to her.
Here is what she had to say:

The song had been a secret for so long that talking about it out loud feels surreal. I forget that this is happening. The idea for For Good came to me as I was walking through campus and seeing all the preparations for the centenary in progress. It hit me: ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to have a Wits Song as they do for the World Cups and other big events?’

It would become the heartbeat of Wits. So on the spot, right in front of the Great Hall, I gave Feziekk a call and said ‘hey, dude, I am going to write the official Wits 100 years celebration song. Are you going to produce it? We have a week.’

Looking back, I don’t think I even gave him time to respond but he knew it was time to work. I started to brainstorm a few ideas for the lyrics while he sent me the beat… ‘We are Witsies’ for good, for good, for good’ is what came to mind.

With this song, it was important for me to write about where I am, where Wits comes from, where Wits is going and how so many of us have become part of the Wits legacy, for future generations.

As you listen to the song, you will notice the references mentioned above… ‘As the sky is not the limit, 100 years in counting, 100 more is coming, this moment calls for us all to celebrate.’
