Residents of Ward 88 are frustrated by repeated power outages

Residents of Ward 88 are grappling with repeated power outages linked to a faulty cable, leading to frustration and financial strain as they seek accountability from City Power.

Residents of Ward 88, along with councillor Nicolene Jonker, expressed their frustration over ongoing power outages, particularly concerning a problematic cable that has caused disruptions multiple times in recent months.

Jonker reported that this is the third instance of issues arising from the same cable, leading to outages lasting four to five days. Many residents are struggling to meet basic needs and are forced to seek alternative solutions to cope with the lack of electricity.

Wolfgang Phoenix, a local resident and former chairperson of the Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA), voiced his concerns about the lack of effective follow-through on repairs. “I understand that City Power is attempting to address the issues, but there seems to be no proper project management in place,” he stated.

Phoenix noted that contractors often perform minimal work before leaving, without ensuring that the problems have been fully resolved. He emphasized that the cable has experienced multiple outages over the past six months, suggesting that a comprehensive replacement of the cable would be a more prudent long-term solution.

City Power has been on-site to address the issues but has treaded carefully to avoid damaging crucial infrastructure, such as fiber and water lines.

Jonker highlighted the delicate nature of the repairs, but residents are demanding accountability and a thorough explanation for the recurring outages.

Phoenix pointed out that despite no significant changes in infrastructure or increased demand for electricity, the cables continue to fail.

He called for a technical explanation from City Power regarding the persistent issues. Residents have resorted to various alternatives, including solar power, generators, and standby batteries, to mitigate the impact of the outages.

However, the costs associated with these solutions are escalating. Phoenix shared that he has spent approximately R2 000 on petrol to run his generator over a few days, highlighting the financial burden placed on residents due to the prolonged outages.

“It’s not just about the petrol, it’s about keeping food from spoiling and ensuring my alarm system works,” he explained.

The community calls for better oversight of City Power’s contractors, arguing that the lack of inspections and accountability is costing the city millions.

Residents are frustrated by the ongoing situation and are advocating for a more sustainable solution to prevent future outages.

As they continue to navigate these challenges, the demand for effective communication and action from City Power remains a top priority for the residents of Ward 88.
