The Argentina Society shares a vibrant artistic collaboration with the South Africans at Marks Park

The Argentina Society at Marks Parks celebrated the rich tapestry of Argentine culture through a series of dynamic art exhibitions in South Africa.

Oriana Perez Casanova, a passionate member of the Argentina Society at Marks Park, recently shared insights about a collaborative art exhibition that showcases diverse talents within the community.

Since March, Casanova and fellow artists have been organising monthly exhibitions aimed at delivering a positive message to the public. “We love the venue, and it’s a unique experience to see so many different works and mediums coming together,” she expressed.

When discussing how she preserves Argentine culture in South Africa, Casanova emphasised the importance of maintaining traditions at home. “We speak Spanish, enjoy our music, and cook traditional foods.

“The Argentinian Association hosts monthly braai’s where we celebrate significant days like Independence Day. These gatherings allow us to share our culture with South Africans,” she noted.

The group also sells mate, a traditional Argentine tea, to further introduce their customs. Oriana highlighted that many Argentine expatriates in South Africa are builders, architects, and engineers who came seeking opportunities.

Kim Paxton, an artist, shared her experience and that it was her first time showcasing her art at the exhibition. “I try to make warm and inviting art.”

Despite their professional pursuits, they remain committed to preserving their heritage. “South Africans are keen to learn about our culture. My sister-in-law, who is South African, has enjoyed discovering empanadas and mate,” Casanova shared.

Looking ahead, Casanova hopes for increased cultural exchange between Argentina and South Africa. “I would love for Argentina to open up more opportunities for sharing ideas and experiences. It’s about finding common ground and celebrating our rich cultures together,” she concluded.
