The parade was inspired by the Northern Lights Festival in Antwerp, Belgium and celebrates the achievements of recycling in communities, mostly the works of the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) and the work being done by them.

The event’s central theme was raising awareness on recycling, highlighting its significance as a driving force for environmental sustainability. Wilma Mutize coordinated it and worked with teachers from Bekezela crèche, learners, students, marshals and members of various community groups like the Brixton Community Forum, Shade, and more.

“The parade was a beautiful success for the people in and surrounding Brixton. The recycled nature of the event highlighted and celebrated waste pickers/waste-preneurs, who are often forgotten, for all they do for society,” said UJ student Hannah Saunders, adding not only did the parade benefit them but also the residents of Brixton as the event involved and showed the lovely community who lives there.

This day showcased captivating performances, engaging displays, and eco-friendly trolleys by reclaimers, all designed to elevate awareness of recycling’s impact and the essential role these reclaimers play in our communities. It welcomed performers from Brixton and exhibition from the UJ visual art students in the alleyway along the route.
