Brixton SAPS faces rising common robberies

A recent report reveals that Brixton SAPS ranks 13th nationally for common robberies, with a notable increase in cases. As local authorities collaborate with the University of Johannesburg to enhance awareness, community engagement is seen as vital in combatting the rising crime rates. Will these efforts make a difference?

The first quarter of the 2024-2025 financial year, spanning April to June 2024, has revealed a concerning trend in crime rates, particularly within the Brixton SAPS precinct.

Recent statistics indicate that Brixton SAPS ranks 13th nationally and sixth provincially for common robbery incidents. The number of reported cases increased from 68 in the same period last year to 73 this year, underscoring a persistent issue in the area.

Brixton SAPS spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff expressed dissatisfaction with the rise in common robberies and the precinct’s ranking.

“Management and members of Brixton SAPS are not happy about the increase in common robberies,” she said. “We are currently engaging with all stakeholders to tackle the problem.”

The station’s Crime Information Management Centre identified that a significant contributing factor to this uptick was the influx of students new to the area, who often became targets for crime due to their tendency to carry valuables openly.

In response, Backhoff noted that Brixton SAPS plans to collaborate with the University of Johannesburg to implement awareness campaigns aimed at sensitising students to the risks they face.

“All hands on deck will be used to change this problem,” she added, emphasising the need for a united approach to combat crime.

In contrast, Bhaai Cassim, secretary for the Johannesburg Sub-District Community Police Board, reported a positive outlook for the Fairland SAPS precinct, which has maintained a stable crime trend during this period.

Cassim noted that there have been no serious issues reported in any single crime category. He expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts between the police and the community in Fairland, stating that such partnerships were crucial for maintaining safety in the area.
As the Brixton SAPS continues to address its challenges with common robberies, the call for community engagement and proactive measures remains vital in fostering a safer environment for all residents.
