Judo star’s strength and skill rewarded

Matthew Hunt has made waves in the judo world by securing a bronze medal at the African Judo Championships in Cameroon, solidifying his rank among the top judokas globally.

Matthew Hunt from Northcliff High School represented South Africa at the African Judo Championships held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where he clinched a prestigious bronze medal.

This achievement not only marks a significant milestone in Matthew’s career but also elevates him to the 24th position on the International Judo Federation’s world ranking list, as proof of his hard work and dedication.

Matthew’s journey to this success involved extensive preparation across four key areas: strength and fitness, technical training, mental readiness, and an unexpected weight cut.

“Transitioning from a rugby weight of 87kg to below 81kg was no small feat, requiring two weeks of disciplined effort. The sacrifices made to compete at this level were substantial, and I am grateful to my supporters for their unwavering encouragement.”
Competing against some of the continent’s best fighters, posed a unique challenge for Matthew, as the unpredictability of opponents often tests even the most seasoned athletes. “The intensity of grappling with these skilled fighters is overwhelming, but it’s an honour to wear the green and gold for my country,” he shared.
