Community takes action for safety

Community Cleaners have stepped up to protect public safety by creating a warning barrier around a treacherously open manhole at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Wilson Street, Fairland, addressing the significant risks posed to pedestrians and motorists.

In a commendable effort to enhance public safety, Community Cleaners had established a warning barrier around a dangerously open manhole located at the busy intersection of 14th Avenue and Wilson Street in Fairland.

This manhole, which plunges over 3m deep, posed significant risks to both pedestrians and motorists, prompting immediate community intervention, fortunately being closed up by the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA).

According to Khayalethu Gqibitole, acting head of department regional operations, areas around such hazards should be clearly demarcated and barricaded with suitable equipment, including warning signs to alert pedestrians and motorists.

“Open manholes are known to cause serious accidents, particularly for unsuspecting pedestrians who may inadvertently walk into them. Small children are especially vulnerable, as they can fall into these hazardous openings, potentially resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.”

Furthermore, open manholes can lead to vehicle accidents, causing damage and endangering lives. To mitigate these risks, safety measures must be implemented when work is being conducted around open manholes.

“It is essential to place warning signs and fencing around open manholes to protect the public from falling in,” Gqibitole stated.

He added that various types of protective barriers can be employed to prevent accidents, including jersey barriers, safety barricading netting, danger tape, and delineators for deviations.

“Additionally, workers should utilise essential safety equipment, such as heavy-duty manhole covers, which should be lifted using hydraulic or manual lifting devices to ensure safety during maintenance.”

Regular inspections of lifting equipment are crucial, with daily checks recommended to maintain safety standards. The distance between manholes is determined by several factors, including the type of underground service and relevant spacing standards, ensuring effective connection of underground pipes, according to Gqibitole.

He said that common materials can be used for manhole covers including polymer, concrete, cast iron, and steel. “It is vital that these covers are securely placed to eliminate hazards and provide convenience for pedestrians and motorists alike.”

Their commitment to safety serves as a reminder of the critical role that local initiatives play in protecting public well-being in urban environments.
