Overcoming adversity and inspiring change

Discover the incredible journey of Bhekumuzi ‘Bheki’ Ngwenya, a former addict who found hope and transformation at U-turn. From the streets to personal growth, his story serves as an inspiration to all who face adversity.

In a remarkable tale of resilience and unwavering determination, Bhekumuzi Ngwenya, lovingly known as “Bheki,” has triumphed over a life plagued by addiction and homelessness, emerging as a symbol of transformation and hope.

Ngwenya’s early years were marked by the challenges of growing up in an environment dominated by alcoholic parents. For 11 long years, he battled addiction and found himself entangled in self-destructive behaviors.

However, fate intervened when he stumbled upon his true passion, dance. This newfound love became the catalyst for his personal growth and self-discovery.

“In 2004, I relocated to Soweto to live with my grandmother, where I found solace and purpose through the art of dance.” Despite possessing natural talent in soccer, Ngwenya made the courageous decision to pursue his passion for dance wholeheartedly.

Encouraged by his dance instructor, he honed his skills and gradually began making a name for himself in the industry. In 2013, his talent took him to Germany for a prestigious dance competition. Yet, his addiction still held sway over his life, leading to a premature end to his overseas endeavor as he was sent back to South Africa.

Unfazed by setbacks, Ngwenya resolved to effect positive changes in his life. Despite the haunting memories and lingering impact of his troubled past, he persevered, learning to manage and control the demons that threatened to isolate him from others.

With a newfound focus on life, Ngwenya joined U-turn in August of last year after completing a residency at Wedge Gardens, a rehabilitation center, starting from January. At U-turn, he embarked on a transformative journey that equipped him with invaluable skills in financial management and effective communication with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

No longer confined to the streets of Soweto, he now confidently engages with people, even participating in weekend soccer matches alongside fellow community members.

At 31 years old, he has shifted his focus from dance to running, wholeheartedly dedicating himself to training for the Comrades Marathon.

Grateful for his newfound purpose, he firmly believes that every individual on Earth possesses a unique mission. His mission is to share his own story and inspire others, shedding light on the boundless possibilities for change and transformation that lie within each person.

He believes that if even one individual can change their life each day, it can create a ripple effect, making a significant difference in the world.
