In an effort to improve the lives of individuals with mobility challenges, the QuadPara Association Gauteng South has teamed up with a recycling organisation to launch a unique initiative. For every tonne of bottle caps collected, the association receives a much-needed financial contribution.
The collection initiative has been making a significant impact for many years, as evidenced by the memories of those who remember schools actively participating in similar endeavours. Five years ago, Lelané De Sousa took it upon herself to start collecting bottle caps for the association.

She stated that these funds are utilised to purchase basic wheelchairs for individuals in need. “This heartwarming endeavour has gained traction over the years, with numerous individuals and organisations joining forces to make a difference.”
Since then, she has been instrumental in gathering a substantial number of bottle caps for the cause.
The Northcliff Ten Pin Bowling Centre has generously provided a container where people can conveniently dispose of their bottle caps. Additionally, the families of bowlers, as well as the residents of Huis Hoëveld in Albertville, an old age home, have shown incredible support by actively collecting bottle caps.

By encouraging bars, cafés, and other businesses to participate, the bottle-cap-collection initiative could grow exponentially, enriching the lives of even more individuals in need. “To obtain the much-needed funds, the collected bottle caps are delivered to the Ry-Ma-In Self Help Centre in Linden for quadriplegics.”
Engeli Botha, a dedicated representative, collects the bottle caps from there and ensures they are exchanged for monetary compensation based on weight.
De Sousa explained that the process operates in tonnes, and the sheer volume of bottle caps required is substantial. This highlights the importance of widespread participation in the initiative, as it significantly enhances the chances of achieving the desired impact.
