Biscuits baked for Mandela at Orban School

The school children spent some time baking biscuits which they will donate to a local soup kitchen.

We are all aware of this special day, which has been set aside to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. In light of this, Orban School hosted two ongoing initiatives to remind their children to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles, and to make a positive impact in their communities.

They assisted in baking trays of biscuits on the day, which would be donated to Claremont-based, Fred & Martie’s Soup Kitchen. This soup kitchen is said to feed about 100 pensioners and pre-primary children daily, at 12:00, and about 400 school-age children at 13:00. They have a desperate need and greatly appreciate any contributions.

The school’s, Louïne van der Vyver, said the day also presented a golden opportunity to do a ‘spring clean’ and declutter cupboards of unwanted clothing. “We will be collecting gently used clothing and shoes for adults, children, and babies,” she said. These donations will be accepted at the school from July 18 to 25.

On July 25 their grade 7s will go to the soup kitchen, where they will hand out the biscuits to the community, who stand in queues every day waiting for their food. They will also hand over the parcels of gently used clothing to the organisers to distribute amongst those in need.
