Get your secateurs ready, it’s time to prune some roses

The Gold Reef Rose Society will host morning pruning session at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in early August.

Why not pack your garden gloves and long-handled loopers among other supplies, and head to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens on August 8, to help prune some roses?

Organised by the Gold Reef Rose Society, the day is an important one to improve the quality and quantity of the rose blooms come October. On the day, Halmar Taschner will also be there to conduct a pruning demonstration. The society’s chairperson, Barbara Wood, said it is important to prune ‘properly and learn from a professional should one have no idea where to start.

Wood explained the day’s target will be to prune all the roses found at the rose gardens of the Emmarentia-based gardens. She shared that the society has been one of the leading participants in replanting the roses that were decimated during Covid-19. “We offered a special campaign to garden clubs, businesses and the general public to help us replant by buying a package for R600 which included three pre-selected roses for Emmerentia,” adding that this campaign will end May 2025.

The society encourages the communities to get involved through donations, prune days, and visiting the rose gardens. “It is important that people realise this is your park to enjoy. The dog walkers, the rose lovers, the picnickers – just everybody should take advantage of this great green lung on your doorstep,” said Wood.
