Earlier this month, Miles (12), who trains at Windsor Glen-based Hajime Judo Academy, won a gold medal at the National Schools South African Championship for Judo held at the University of Bloemfontein in the U55kg division for 12-year-olds.

In June, Hugo (10), who trains at Parktown-based Dorfman Karate, won a gold medal at the KWF SA National Children and Youth Karate Championship in his kata division.

Miles puts his success down to regular training and a passion for the sport. “I started judo at my school when I was seven years old, and I go to evening classes as often as possible,” he said.

Hugo also attributes his success to consistent practice. “Although I was ill before the tournament and injured my leg, my seven years of training at Dorfman Karate helped me to secure a gold medal for the second year in a row at the KWF SA Champs.”

The boys both have the dream of visiting Japan, the home of karate and judo when they attain their black belts one day.
