In the year 2000, a group of passionate baseball enthusiast from Japan embarked on a journey to South Africa, driven by their love for the game.

United by a shared purpose, they formed a formidable team known as the Japanese Express. Led by the talented coach Yosuke Koide, this team has since become a symbol of resilience – unity of Japanese baseball.

The Japanese Express is diverse group, comprising of both young and experienced players. With the youngest member at 15 years old and the oldest at 54, this team transcends age barriers to bring together a wealth of knowledge, skill and dedication to the sport. Their commitment to excellence has made them a force to be reckoned with on the diamond field.

Marks Park has been the nurturing ground for the Japanese Express, providing the perfect setting for their annual gathering in February. The camaraderie and unity fostered during these events extend beyond the game, creating lasting friendships and promoting cultural change.

The Japanese Express members do not only confine themselves solely to baseball. “We actively participate in softball tournaments, representing renowned Japanese companies such as Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi,” said Koide.

The Japanese owe their success in part, to the inclusive environment provided by the Mustangs and the support of Allan McCabe, a member of the Gauteng Provincial League. “His kindness and continuous invitations to participate in games have made a significant impact on the team’s experience in South Africa.”

The name ‘Japanese Express’ is a reflection of the team’s determination and the embodiment of their Japanese spirit. It signifies their commitment and accelerate their skills, both mentally and physically on the field.

The influence of the Japanese team on South African baseball has not gone unnoticed. Allan McCabe is a witness to the team’s impact and acknowledges the significant improvements in the game since their arrival.

With coach Koide at the helm, the Japanese Express continues to ignite the passion of baseball, bringing the spirit of Japan to South Africa, one game at a time.
