JoJo tank provides hope and reliable water storage for Hotel Hope

Hotel Hope, a community organisation dedicated to caring for orphaned and abandoned children, has received a generous donation of a JoJo tank.

In a significant development towards improving water storage, Hotel Hope recently received 5 000-litre JoJo tank, generously donated by Miriam Hanke. This tank, while still being installed, is set to benefit the community by providing a secure storage solution for water, ensuring a reliable water supply even in challenging times.

The JoJo tank, widely distributed in South Africa and Zimbabwe, is specifically designed for various applications and offers secure storage for water. Its low profile design makes it ideal for situations where height limitations are a factor. With a black inner lining that prevents algae growth, the tank ensures the freshness and quality of stored water.

The installation process was carried out meticulously, focusing on stability and functionality to ensure the tank’s long-term effectiveness. The tank will serve as a valuable resource for rainwater harvesting, particularly as a backup system in areas with height restrictions. With a capacity of 5 000 litres, it provides ample storage to meet the water needs of Hotel Hope and the surrounding community.

Miriam Hanke, the generous donor, shared her personal connection to Hotel Hope, stating that her grandson was once a resident. The first picture she saw of him was at Hotel Hope, holding her daughter’s lap, forging a deep emotional bond. Miriam’s second connection came when she noticed a construction worker at the hotel. Subsequently, she read an article in the Northcliff Melville Times, which highlighted the need for a water tank at Hotel Hope. This revelation sparked an idea in Miriam’s mind, and she promptly reached out to her friends in Germany, who generously contributed to the cause.

Understanding the vital role that water plays in everyday life, Miriam emphasised that while electricity can be managed without, water is an essential resource for survival. She expressed her happiness when she learned that Hotel Hope had received the JoJo tank, foreseeing the positive impact it would have on the community.

Founder of Hotel Hope, Oliver Quambusch, highlighted the challenging water situation in Melville, where the hotel is located. “The water situation here in Melville is crazy. We had to go 19 days without proper water. It is incredibly disruptive and expensive for us to fetch water from other locations. We are grateful for the JoJo tank donation, which will see us through the worst of times.”

During this period, the care workers had to fetch water from a local JoJo tank, which was filled up by Johannesburg Water. This meant multiple trips with 10-litre buckets, adding to the already demanding responsibilities of caring for orphaned and abandoned children. Alternatively, their driver had to travel to other homes in Westdene or Newlands to collect water, incurring significant expenses and wasting valuable time and resources.

Oliver expressed immense gratitude for the generous donation of the 5 000-litre JoJo tank, which will help them navigate through the worst water scarcity scenarios.

However, Hotel Hope aims to further enhance their water storage capabilities by acquiring two JoJo tanks and a purification system. While the installation costs amount to R25 000 per tank, Miriam Hanke’s efforts and the support of her friends, family, and loved ones in Germany have already raised R30 000. surpassing the initial goal. They now seek an additional R20 000 to replicate the water storage solution at their home in Westdene.

Miriam Hanke’s extraordinary initiative has generated not only hope but also financial support exceeding their expectations. “I am so happy with the work that Hotel Hope is doing. With my time here in South Africa, I can see the impact of electricity and water.”
The installation of the JoJo tank will not only alleviate their water scarcity challenges but also streamline their operations, allowing them to focus on their primary mission of caring for orphaned and abandoned children.

Hotel Hope is grateful for the support they have received thus far and invites individuals, organisations, and the community to contribute towards their goal of providing reliable water storage for their home in Westdene.
