Yentl 40th celebration

To mark Barbra Streisand’s directorial debut with Yentl 40 years ago, The Historic Documentary Film Society has sourced a remastered print of the film to be screened.
Based on the short story by Nobel Prize Laureate, Isaac Bashevis Singer, the tale imagines a young woman in 19th century Poland whose quest is to study the Talmud (Teachings of The Torah) was denied to women at the time. To access The Holy Books at The Yeshiva (Rabbinical Academy) she disguises herself as a man. Whimsical complications set in. Her private thoughts treated as a monologue in song were written by the Academy Award winning team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman with composer Michel Legrand. Streisand would achieve a first for women as a Golden Globe Award winner in her capacity as producer, director, screenplay writer and star.
