Melville comes alive during street festival

A spectacular street festival brings the community together like never before.

Amazing things can happen when communities come together. Never has this been more clear than at the booming success that was The Happening which took place in Melville on March 2.
Hundreds of residents took to 7th Street in Melville to enjoy an artistic showcase the likes of which has never been seen before in the city. With audience participation encouraged, the line between performer and spectators was blurred as community members joined in with many of the dancers and performers who had freely given of their time on the day.
The festival was uniquely Melville, showcasing the best of a suburb whose residents are doing all they can to fight urban decay and keep their vibrant community shining, the way it famously always has.

From fairy wings to life-sized wire cars, and from African dancers to rockers on rooftops, there was something for absolutely everyone to enjoy at The Happening, with even a typical Joburg thunderstorm not hampering the celebrations.
With no short supply of artists, dancers, stall holders and community participation, the tag line of the event, ‘Connect, Create, Participate’, was certainly the epitome of expectation meeting reality.
