Go-kart racer competes for spot in Italian competition

Luca Maffia is set to race in the African Karting Cup where the winner goes to Italy to represent South Africa.

Luca Maffia (12) races at half a second below pace, enough speed to give him a chance at winning the upcoming African Karting Cup go-kart competition.

Despite competing against drivers who have been in the sport from the age of five, Luca is excelling in the sport.

The prestigious competition will take place from 15–17 February at the Benoni Formula-K race track where the winner will go on to represent South Africa in Italy. There will be 15 drivers to beat on the day, no small feat but one Luca is determined to do.

“I am excited and grateful for this opportunity. My strategy is to qualify in a top position so I have an advantage in the final race. I hope all my hard work and dedication will pay off ; overall I just want to have fun,” says Luca.

The family lives in Northcilff and father Sergio coaches both Luca and his younger brother Fabio (9) who has also started racing. Both boys attend Cliffview Primary School.

“I could not be prouder of my boys and am thrilled that they are doing so well. Both boys have a natural talent for the sport and there is a whole community cheering Luca on for the competition.”

Sergio raced as a youngster, a love for the sport he has now shared with his two boys who began the sport only seven months ago. “Their mother gets pretty nervous before a race but she is equally so proud.”

John Killas, owner of Olivia’s Coffeebake in Northcliff, is cheering Luca on ahead of the tournament. “Drive like the wind and race your heart out. We are all so proud of you.”
