Community groups their hope for 2024

Various communities that have been at the heart of ensuring our neighbourhoods thrive tell us their hopes for the new year.

As each new year rolls in so too does the hope of all the possibilities it holds to be great.

Though it may come with unexpected challenges our determination to face them head on makes the wonder of it all the more important for us to experience. Local organisations and groups also have the same wonder when it comes to what they envisage their year to be. More importantly what they hope to achieve in the community they serve.

Here are some well wishes and hopes of the year from some local organisations:

General manager of the Tshepo Community Development initiative Alet Geldenhuys: Our organisation is making some changes in 2024 – we will now be serving two meals a day, three days a week. By teaching them skills and supporting them to do for themselves, we are moving away from the begging mentality and creating a culture where you take responsibility for yourself.
Director and piano teacher at Resonanze Project Music School Retha Delport: My hope is for the music school to grow even bigger. I look forward to a good year and being fully alive. To the community, may you experience true peace that transcends all understanding, and may you overflow with true joy.
Convener of Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries Sarah Welham: Thank you to all those who have shown concern for the plight of our old heritage cemeteries. In 2024 we hope to finish the restoration project. We also look forward to peace and an absence of violence and destruction in our city.
Volunteer at Melville Koppies Wendy Carstens: I hope that 2024 will be a fruitful year with lots and lots of visitors. To the community, whatever issues we may face in South Africa, Melville Koppies will always be a place to reconnect with nature and destress.
