Northcliff Rotary continues its charitable crusade to uplift those in need

The group, led by president Rita Millan is not stopping to rest as they outline some impressive goals for the new year.

Six months after becoming president of the Northcliff Rotary Club, Rita Millan reflects on her journey and the year.

The group actively makes a positive difference in the lives of those in need and has had a bumper year.

“In collaboration with the Rushmore Rotary Club in the UK, we were able to hand out wheelchairs to deserving recipients at no cost to themselves and will continue to do so next year.” They have distributed over 40 00 wheelchairs throughout Southern Africa.

In an even more impressive target, they have partnered with the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation to bring writing desks to 20 million children throughout Southern Africa.

“Locally we held a speech competition incorporating 10 primary schools, an initiative started 42 years ago. The self-confidence this instils in these students will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

“We are also active in supporting a vulnerable girls’ home by treating them to fun events that they would otherwise not experience, as well as providing moms of newborn premature babies with hampers of essential clothing and toiletries, among other projects. Almost 1 300 of these hampers were distributed across South Africa.”

She said next year, they would concentrate more on fund-raising initiatives by securing high-profile guest speakers so that they can continue to support their legacy projects.

“We are, of course, always looking for others within our community who are in desperate need of assistance.”

They aim to plant 100 fruit and shade trees in schools in 2024 and will partner with other Rotary clubs to see if they can instal toilets in schools within disadvantaged communities.

“Wishing you all a happy festive season and an exciting 2024 and please stay safe if you are travelling.”
