Brixton-based choir celebrates first birthday

The Brixton-based choir celebrated their birthday with a concert.

There is treble in Brixton and that’s all thanks to the Local Vocals who recently celebrated their first birthday. In honour of this special anniversary, the choir hosted its community to a concert held at Brixton Church.

The sun sets on the Brixton community while they enjoy each other’s company.

Looking back at the past year, founder Sharize Schaerer can’t help but joyfully acknowledge how not only have they survived a year, they have also managed to grow from 12 members to now 20. In this time they have performed at five different events, the most notable of these being the Brixton Light Festival and, of course, their very own birthday concert, which was attended to by over 200 people.

The long table is set for the community to enjoy a meal together.

One the day, the audience left with more than song in their heart. They also walked away with hope and happiness within it. “Especially because of the diversity and community spirit embodied at the event. This is what we exist for,” said Schaerer.
A sentiment she attributes to their impact on the community as along with this, the choir also helps communities see they have the ability to create joy and beauty with resources and skills they already have.

Her wish for the choir is to grow all while they continue to have fun and bring joy through communal singing. You will probably hear them achieve this even more melodically as they perform Freshly Ground’s Doo be Doo – a song they really enjoy to sing.

After the concert, the community gathered along the street outside of the church and sat together at a long table where they enjoyed meals prepared by fellow community members.
