Hoërskool Linden’s hall of fame plans to inspire all its learners

The school unveiled their Hall of Fame, which shows all the famous people who once attended the school.

On a California road in the USA hoards of people walk Hollywood Boulevard as they read all the names that so far make up the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In effort to thus also inspire their own learners, Hoërskool Linden recently unveiled their own Hall of Fame.

Pictures of local famous faces, who have achieved great success in their life, line a corridor that learners will now walk daily. What makes these faces even more significant is that like them, they all attended the Linden-based school.

A famous face present on the day was actress Maude Sandham who has starred in international films such as The Mauritanian and local soapie, Binnelanders. She happily signed her picture and was left speechless at the recognition her alma mater gave her.

Head of culture and drama teacher Nina Deale said there are a lot of past learners who have since left the school and become famous within the arts – be it singing, dancing or working behind the stage. “This is why we started the Hall of Fame as we wanted to honour them and inspire our children as they walk this corridor when heading to their art or drama classes.”

She explained that although the learners all know of these famous faces, none knew that they actually went to their school, a visual representation that Deale thinks is quite needed. At the time of the event, it was also the school’s culture week and when asked why such weeks are important for children, she said they give the opportunity to learners to show their versatility – as it allows for them to develop beyond the sports field. As she sees it, some learners might not even know they have a liking for art or that they even have a talent for it. Deale thinks it is essential to expose children to the arts and encourage them to either be part of it or at the least, just simply enjoy it.

The school hopes this Hall of Fame grows and manages to have new faces on its walls of more of its past learners.
