City Power has appointed a contractor to carry out all repairs and installations at the Brixton substation where a transformer caught alight on June 11.
According to the power utility, preliminary investigation shows that the fire was triggered by overloading which then damaged every piece of equipment inside the chamber which is situated at the corner of Fulham and Ripley Streets.
Streets that have been affected are as follows:
- Fulham street
- Barnes Street
- Putney Street
- Ripley Street
- Surbiton Avenue
- Hampton Avenue
“Details around the exact cause of the fire are still being probed. The contractor is currently on site to commence repairs. They will be installing one Ring Main Unit (3way RMU) and two 500KVA Mini-substations,” said City Power.

The Brixton transformer substation caught fire on June 11.
City Power operators are still investigating the cause of the fire, however, the substation is completely destroyed.
Johannesburg Water said in a statement that pumping from Joburg Water’s Brixton reservoir to the Brixton tower will be affected due to the fire. This will affect the water supply to the Brixton reservoir and tower zones.
A pumping unit is being organised for the Helen Joseph Hospital.
