Screen time and the damage it does to children when not carefully monitored
Technolife Wise Foundation to host another event at Roosevelt High School in March,
Last October, the publication covered a formal relationship being cemented between Roosevelt High School and the TechnoLife Wise Foundation.
Launched by Marlena Kruger, the aim of the foundation’s work is to encourage schools and families to restrict the use of smartphones by children until they enter Grade 8 at school.
Roosevelt High had implemented its own no cellphone policy back in 2016 so it was a natural match for the two to collaborate.
Kruger raises awareness of the effects that ‘the overuse of technology has on our body, hearts, minds and souls’.
Through the foundation’s motto ‘Wait until Grade 8’, parents are advised to only provide their children with phones that have access to the internet and social media after they turn 14.
Kruger, a long-time Linden resident has studied at length how children’s brain development is damaged by too much screen time.
She said, “The foundation will host its next seminar for parents and caregivers to become ‘digitally wise’ and learn how to protect and nurture their children on Saturday, March 11, 2023.”
There will be slots for different age groups at Roosevelt High School starting from 9am. Registration is available on the foundation’s website www.technolifewise.org/events
Kruger’s digital wellness work has been recognised both locally and internationally with her most recently being awarded the prestigious Africa Education Leadership Award in the Edutech category. She accepted the reward on 13 December 2022 in Mauritius.
