Shooting towards success in Emmarentia

Young archer, Maseeha Kajee shares her on inspiration behind joining archery and all the success she has experienced through it.

A quote from the Disney hit Brave said in part, ‘Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.’

These were words said by the audacious lead character, Merida, whose biggest ambition in life was to forge her path in the world, one in which she had full autonomy.

This is much like Maseeha Kajee, an archer of Marks Park Archery, who, like Merida has her eye on the target and looks to be aiming for success. Come February 13 to 18, she will take part in the International Field Archery Association Indoor World Championships in Kent, England where she has no other goal but to attain gold.

After she watched Brave when she was about six years old, Maseeha would spend the four years that followed convincing her parents to allow her to take part in archery. She was 10 years old when she started the sport and now, at 16, the young sportswoman is forging a name for herself in the sporting code.

Some of her best experiences in the sport included participating in international competitions in countries such as New Zealand where she won a gold medal. Another great experience was participating in the South African National Archery Championships last year. “It was freezing and windy but it was a great experience which I enjoyed as it was lots of fun,” she said.

There have also been challenges for her which have had a lot to do with her fitness as well as the pressures she may have from various external factors and those she puts on herself. However, as soon as she holds that bow and arrow in her hands, all negative thoughts disappear. “Everything else that I may have thought of throughout the day, be it school work, or any other stresses, they all just vanish and all I think about is just shooting my best.”

To young archers such as herself, her message is to believe in themselves and to take everything at their own pace, “If it isn’t working out for you, take the time you need, everything will get better and to just have fun.”
