Why 2022 was a great Eisteddfod year for Orban School

The school was proud to share how well they did in 2022 through their participation at the Eisteddfod.

Orban School’s participation in the Eisteddfod in 2022 showed just how talented their learners were in all the different art forms.

The school’s Louine van der Vyver said they received some wonderful news. After the school closed for the academic year in 2022, the National Eisteddfod Academy of South Africa held its prize-giving to recognise the outstanding achievements of that year’s eisteddfod season.

“For 11 consecutive years, Orban was the proud recipient and undisputed winner of the National Eisteddfod Award for the Best Overall Performance for an Institution in the Johannesburg Region (the region included all schools and arts institutions from Joburg North, South, Central and East),” she explained.

Van der Vyver said at the end of 2022, they were crowned as national runners-up. “Orban School was awarded second place for Best Overall Achievement nationwide in 2022. For a small school such as ours, this is no mean feat. Congratulations to all our learners and teachers who made this possible, and a great thank you to our art department – teachers Michele Zulch, Stephen Hawkins, and Marlies van Tonder, you are the best,” she shared.

Orban participated in 298 items in 2022 including drama, fine arts, dance, and music. It was the first year that they were able to enter the dance category at which their dancers did really well.

Overall the learners achieved:

“It was also wonderful to see that two of our alumni, who have participated in the NEA through Orban from as early as the foundation phase, also received awards on the evening. Tasmiyah Bhamjee was the item winner for Grade 10 Speech to Entertain and Simonne van der Vyver was the item winner for Afrikaans Verhalende Prosa Graad 10 and medal award and category winner: Contemporary Music Keyboard Instruments (piano) Gr7-12,” said Van Der Vyver.
