Community Cleaners continue quest for a cleaner corner of Jozi

The impact the group is having on their environment cannot be over-emphasised when one sees how much litter and waste is removed each weekend from public parks and open spaces.

The Community Cleaners are literal godsends for the areas in and around Northcliff, Fairland, Berario, and Valeriedene.

Andre Swanepoel, Hugo Erasmus and Ryan Kloppers are the driving forces of the initiative and wish to thank every individual and local business that has supported them thus far.

Every weekend a team of volunteers grab their black bags, garden tools, and sunhats before they head out to a pre-arranged location in need of a deep clean. Their dream is to have public parks and shared open spaces become places of recreation and enjoyment, free from man-made pollution and litter that currently makes so many areas unattractive. Not only do they collect litter, but also illegally dumped rubble and whatever else they find that should not be there.

Last year, they got the blessing of Johannesburg Parks and Zoo to remove buck weed and lantana, two invasive species of plants that are overtaking many areas in public parks.

Swanepoel said, “It is wonderful to have the support of the City and to be able to do some maintenance like clearing fallen and dangerous hanging branches.”

Kloppers said, “We also hope to inspire and encourage other communities to take responsibility for litter, to get rid of their rubble properly, and take pride in where they live.”

The group don’t only tackle easy to reach places, but every nook and cranny they come across that is polluted.

Ward 98 councillor Beverly Jacobs previously said, “It is a wonderful initiative where residents are tackling problem areas and they are doing exceptional work under difficult circumstances. It has helped build camaraderie and a sense of community for all those involved. It is really inspiring to see the growth of the Community Cleaners and as a councillor, I am immensely grateful.”

The Northcliff Melville Times asked for a list of businesses that have assisted the group to show the support they have, but the list was so long it was impossible to mention everyone. Erasmus said, “It is because the work we are doing is obviously positively impacting those around us and people want to help. It has been overwhelming and we are so grateful.”
