A year to show respect to the universe and love to people

Seido Karate Johannesburg celebrated the hopes the new year brings.

Another year was embraced with great hope as Seido Karate Johannesburg hosted Kagami Biraki at Emmarentia Dam.

Kagami Biraki, which means ‘Opening the mirror’, is an important event performed at traditional Japanese karate schools to mark a new year and to celebrate life and health. The dojo’s Shihan George Wong explained that although the event did not include some traditional aspects, it was a symbol of the transition into a new year/phase and a celebration of the activities that takes place and health presently enjoyed.

The families of those who took part in the ceremony as well as onlookers, found themselves beguiled by the sea of white karategi, that engulfed this one section of Emmarentia Dam on this particular Sunday morning.

Shihan Wong, said each year has its own special message, this year, this year’s message being to ‘respect the universe, love people.’ On this he continued to say that should people keep this message running through their mid throughout the year they would be more mindful of others, approaching each person they meet wit respect, care and love.
