Beautiful baby girl delivered by brave JMPD officer on the streets of Northcliff

Sergeant Connie Nkuna and colleagues helped to safely bring a baby girl into the world after her mother went into labour unexpectedly while walking.

Northcliff welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world when she was unexpectedly born with the help of JMPD officers.

A woman went into labour while making her way on foot to a nearby hospital when her daughter decided to make her arrival.

JMPD officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in the area and were stopped by a Good Samaritan who directed them to the labouring woman on the corner of Milner Avenue and Beyers Naudé Drive.

JMPD spokesperson Officer Xolani Fihla said, “Our officers together with Sergeant Connie Nkuna immediately went to see how they could help and to assess the situation. Nkuna requested support from the Roosevelt Fire Station and paramedics.”

The baby called Blessing – due to the circumstances of her birth – is attended to by paramedics after her unexpected birth in Northcliff.

He said the labour progressed quickly and the baby was born safely with assistance from Nkuna, the Good Samaritan and the woman’s sister. “Thankfully there were no complications.”

As soon as paramedics arrived, the woman and her baby girl were transported to the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital where they were both discharged after they were seen by medical staff.

Fihla said, “The mother chose the name Blessing for her daughter after Sergeant Nkuna, said that the baby’s birth was a blessing.”

Sergeant Nkuna was recently promoted to the position of sergeant and was on her first day in the new role in Region B when the incident occurred.

This was Nkuna’s first experience with a situation of this nature said Fihla. “She was so worried that they might have done something wrong but was reassured by paramedics that they did all they needed to in the situation to keep everyone safe.”

Acting Chief of JMPD Angie Mokasi commended Sergeant Nkuna for going above and beyond the call of duty by ensuring that she helps the distraught mother as best she can while serving the City of Johannesburg with the highest pride and dedication.

Nkuna has worked in the department for 15 years and is a mother of three children.
