Delta Park school plants vegetable beds and fruit trees for children

More than 80 heads of cabbage have been grown in the garden since April.

Newly grown vegetable gardens at Delta Park School have ensured the continued success of a feeding scheme that sees 40 children fed regularly.

The remedial school right next to Delta Park is subsidised by government and sees only about 40% of the learners pay school fees.

To alleviate demand on the government, parent at the school, Nicole Machowski, reached out for help before planting six vegetable beds, another for staff, and three trees (lemon, mulberry and avocado).

Blairgowrie Urban Farmers, Farm Table, Straight from the Ground, Blairgowrie Community Association, The Unwrapped Co. and a host of other community groups and members showed their support.

Since Machowski started planting around April, the gardens have yielded produce of more than 80 heads of cabbage, as well as spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and beans.

“We want to grow this and make it sustainable,” she said.

“In the future we would like to be able to feed the families of the children as well, so we are asking for donations and help all the time.”

The group specifically wants organic compost, seedlings, and a bath tub or other suitable containers for their worm farm.
