Climbing onto the edges of success

Young rock climber Coco Senekal shares on her win at the Gauteng Climbing Junior Boulder Cup.

Once Coco Senekal had her first experience with rock climbing, it was a fascination she could not let go of.

Her intrigue and love of the sport led this young rock climber to the win when she recently placed first at the Gauteng Climbing Junior Boulder Cup. Coco’s winning streak didn’t just stop there, she also won the Gauteng Top Rope Cup.

“Winning first place felt amazing. I never thought I was going to win as it was my first time and I was really nervous,” Coco said.

She added that it has given her confidence a big boost and made her want to achieve so much more.

The De La Salle Holy Cross College Grade 3 learner started climbing when she was about six years old after her family was introduced to the sport. “It was love at first sight for her and she couldn’t get enough,” said mother, Jo.

Her mother added that if she could, Coco would climb all day, every day.

Coco said, “[What] I love most about climbing are the friends I have made and the people I have met. It also makes me so happy that I found something I am good at.”

She trains three times a week, once with her father and twice with her coach.

One of her greatest experiences so far was when she was climbing outdoors and had an eagle flying all around her.
