Brixton Police Station warns against opening false cases

The station shares how people have opened false cases to claim from insurance companies, among other reasons.

Are times so tough on community members that some go to police stations to open false cases, in some cases to claim from insurance companies?

Brixton Police Station spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff shared that community members would open false cases on a daily basis even after being warned that they would be charged for perjury if they give a false statement.

She explained that, in some instances, they found that a false case was opened it would be for an assortment of reasons, such as so someone could claim from insurance companies, valuables being lost due to negligence or students who fear to inform their parent/caregiver of a lost item so they open theft or common robbery cases.

“All cases opened are properly investigated by the detectives and all possible aspects are being followed up to ensure that a suspect on the reported case can be arrested,” said Backhoff.

She added that the investigating officer will go and see if video footage is available, interview eye witnesses and attend the crime scene to check for leads.

The station also engages with insurance companies to inform them of possible perjury on a claim and the person who opened the case will face the consequences. “On each and every case docket opened, the complainant will be required to sign a perjury form that will hold the complainant accountable should it be found that the case was opened under false pretences.”

Irrespective, Backhoff encouraged the community to report cases that are true so that the station has proper information on cases reported and the specific crimes happening within their precinct and where possible, link other cases together to catch the perpetrators.
