Disability did not stop local resident from contributing to Westdene community

The Westdene crime forum could use your support with Rosenblum at the helm.

Being shot and paralysed has not stopped Nicholas Rosenblum from thriving and being a committed community leader.

He was shot during an armed robbery in 2010 when he instantly lost the use of his legs. He still has use of his arms and hands, but life changed drastically overnight.

“I had my own company and people who depended on me for their livelihoods, so I had to find a way to continue my work as quickly as I could. Luckily, I had the resources to get the treatment and help that I needed as I had to relearn how to do virtually everything for myself all over again. It was hard but I persevered.”

Aside from running his own successful company, Rosenblum is the chairman of the Sub-Sector 1 Crime Forum (SSCF) for Westdene which falls under the Sophiatown CPF.

When asked why he was active in his community when he faced day-to-day difficulties, Rosenblum said, “This is where I live, where I own a property so it’s in my best interests to be a concerned resident. I am also very active. The past is the past, we can’t change it, but we can influence the present and future.”

The committee of five meet monthly, share local information with the police and work with the bigger CPF. “The Sophiatown CPF have some challenges but that does not stop us in Westdene doing our bit to help make our community safer.”

They would like more people to come on board and join them. They are especially hoping for volunteers to help them to represent the youth and elderly better.
