Successful sting operation by Sophiatown police and law enforcement agencies

O Kae Malao continues to hammer criminals in latest multi-agency operation in Sophiatown and Westbury.

The Northcliff Melville Times accompanied Sophiatown police as they hosted last week’s O Kae Malao operation.

O Kae Malao (‘bring back the law’) is the term currently being used for multi-agency sting operations around the city.

The carefully planned operation was conducted with no sightings of irregular behaviour from law enforcement officials during many hours of the assignment.

During stop-and-search investigations in the Ahmed Kathrada informal settlement especially, when searching shacks, police and others acted with respect and calm.

SAPS members from Brixton, Parkview, Yeoville and Langlaagte beefed up manpower along with JMPD officers, CID (Criminal Investigative Department), home affairs, private security companies and community patrollers.

Areas covered were Sophiatown, Westdene, Newlands, Westbury and Claremont.

Sophiatown Police Station Commander Brigadier Alfred Ndebele said, “I commend the good work done by the police and other agencies. It was a successful operation and I thank everyone who was involved.”

Johannesburg District Commander Major General Max Masha reported, “In total 39 suspects were apprehended for crimes ranging from possession of drugs, possession of dangerous weapons and operating a shebeen without a licence and 12 undocumented individuals were also arrested.”

Sophiatown police spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn. added,“Two suspects were apprehended for possession of an unlicenced firearm which had the serial number scratched off during the stop-and-search activities in Westbury.”

Parkview Police Station Commander Colonel Devan Govender also joined the operation and said, “It is great when police stations collaborate like this and achieve good results as we have done here to help keep our communities safer.”

All suspects will appear in court soon.
