Multi-agency collaboration leads to massive clean-up at Jerusalem site in Fairland

City officials and community members band together to clean up problematic Jerusalem site

An ongoing eyesore and problem area in Fairland is at the ‘Jerusalem site’ on the corner of Johannes and Still streets.

A three-day clean-up operation organised by the city’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum) has transformed the space into a safer and cleaner space.

The Integrated Visible Service Delivery (IVSD) team gathered teams from different departments to blitz the area and pave the way for a sustainable plan to be formed to prevent it reverting to a problem area.

“We convened a task team and sat down with different stakeholders but mainly the management of Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) as they are the department that deals and manages this open space. They will share plans for the space so the community itself can have input in the final strategy for the area. We need all stakeholders to come up with a sustainable plan that benefits the community, “said Auriel Kobola, manager at Crum.

Ward 98 councillor Beverly Jacobs was present along with members from Crum, Pikitup, City Parks, JPC, Fairland police, JMPD, department of social development, residents associations, and volunteers from the Community Cleaners.

Jacobs said, “We need to protect city assets and for all relevant departments and stakeholders to work together for a sustainable resolution to this problem site.”

Hugo Erasmus from Community Cleaners applauded the efforts. “We are always happy to help. This was one of the areas we were keen to address ourselves so when this plan was announced we were thrilled to be able to assist.”
