A tribute to the MGM studios

The Documentary Film Society plans to host a tribute to the MGM studios as they screen 'That's entertainment' at the Ditsong Military Museum.

So you are yet to discover the excitement and awe of physically being in Tinseltown, but why should that stop you from experiencing its essence even from afar?

Well, in hopes to have you experience this, the Historic Documentary Film Society plans to host you to a morning of cinematic delight as they screen That’s Entertainment – a tribute to MGM Studios’ Golden Era.

Back in 1974, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) screened its 50th anniversary tribute to which Emmarentia local, Selwyn Klass, had the pleasure of attending. There he found himself in the presence of some of the sliver screen’s most adored stars of that era. “To have been in their esteemed company, I mean these were legends of a different era,” he shared.

Klass was invited to the event because of his affiliation [at the time], with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as a correspondent, and, to his knowledge, he was the only South African correspondent at the time that he was aware of.

Now, close to 50 years later, Klass, cofounder of the Historic Documentary Film Society, plans to honour the legacy of this studio whose motto was ‘Do it big, do it right and give it class’. Sentiments they plan to live by come in preparation and execution of the screening.

He explained the documentary that will be screened is virtually 100 years of MGM’s heritage. In the documentary some of the great stars of this golden era will introduce their roles in the films they starred in while they reminisce about what it was like for them to make some of these classic movies.
