King David Victory Park learners tell no yarns

Recently, the Knitwits headed to the school to teach the children how to crochet.

It’s fun learning how to crochet, and it’s all the more special knowing that this fun learning experience will end with someone less fortunate than you getting a scarf this winter.

This was the case for the primary school learners of King David Victory Park who spent part of their morning learning how to crochet and knit thanks to the Knitwits of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative.

Jaco Loöter, who introduced himself as ‘Mr Blanket’, explained they took the scarves collected at the school as well as other locations, to an annual scarf drive which this year was held at Helen Joseph Hospital on July 6. There, the scarves made by the children were among the many hung around the hospital to be taken by those in need of them.

It was important for the Knitwits to teach the children this new skill as it had them use their hands to create something that would later be given to someone less fortunate. Loöter said these children were at a good age to recognise the difference they were making.

The morning at the school was a successful one, with girls and boys really getting into the whole process. “We have some lefties, which is very difficult teaching them as I am right-handed but, even though challenging, it has been quite nice as they are all very committed and receptive to the whole process.”

Loöter was not the only one teaching children how to knit, accompanying him were some of the organisation’s ambassadors from various communities within the city.
