The University of Johannesburg (UJ) U20 women’s team beat JVW from Bedfordview 2–0 in a nail-biting final after previously winning matches against Wits Ladies and Panorama FC.
Led by captain Angela Munasi, the newly crowned Gauteng champions for 2022 now qualify to play for the province in the Engen Champ of Champs competition in October.

The match played at Marks Park was a personal triumph for Thubelihle Shamase, also from the UJ team, who walked away with three awards for Top Goal Scorer, Player of the Tournament and Striker of the Tournament.
Nthabeleng Modiko, assistant coach for the UJ Women’s Football Team, said it was only their team’s second time participating in the tournament. “To be a champion in Gauteng and going up to win against other champions from other provinces is a big thing. Personally, this is one of the things I will remember in my coaching career.

“The development of women’s soccer in our country has been on the rise and this is encouraging for the young girls that are growing up watching competitions like this. It is also an amazing opportunity for the youth to showcase their talents.”
The Engen Knockout Challenge, started in 2003, has become one of the best football development tournaments in the country.
