The search for the diamond in the rough at De La Salle Holy Cross College

The school held their annual major production and it had audiences dreaming of magical Arabian nights.

A whole new world was promised by De La Salle Holy Cross College when they showcased their annual production, this time it was Aladdin.

Audiences were without a doubt taken on a magic carpet ride that did more than just take them wonder by wonder, it also took them over, sideways and under.

For five days the young thespians magically transported those in attendance to glorious Agrabah, where they followed the love story of Aladdin and princess Jasmine. All of this without even leaving Victory Park.

The school’s drama teacher, Devon Flemmer, explained they had four months to prepare and rehearse the production. “It required a lot of commitment and perseverance from the pupils and creative team involved, and we were incredibly proud of the result.”

Flemmer said the ultimate message behind Aladdin is, “Just be yourself! We often find ourselves in situations where we wish we had a genie who could make us richer, more likeable, more influential, more popular – but Aladdin teaches us to accept ourselves just the way we are and embrace our own uniqueness, talents and abilities.”

The creative arts teacher, who has only been part of the school for the past six months, teaching grades 7 to 9, shared the aim of the arts is to expose pupils to the different creative disciplines and build confidence.

He explained what set this production apart was, from a creative standpoint, treating the production process as a professional one. He had great expectations of every team member to ensure that the performance they delivered was of a high standard.

He concluded that everything from the choreography to the lighting, to the music to the acting and design, works in harmony to produce a slick and exciting story. “The production really relies on team building and commitment to ensure that each pupil really fulfils their potential and learns invaluable life lessons along the way.”
