Copper pipes worth more than R500 000 discovered in Newlands
Sophiatown police made the discovery in a bakkie, abandoned following a collision.
Yesterday, July 4 members of the Sophiatown police discovered copper pipes valued at more than R500 000 in the back of a Ford bakkie in Newlands.
Captain T J de Bruyn, spokesperson for the station said, “The driver had fled the scene after the vehicle was involved in a collision with a Corsa bakkie which drove away following the incident.”
It is unknown at this stage if the Ford vehicle was stolen, and police are investigating the possibility that the copper pipes are the result of tampering with state infrastructure.
Sophiatown Police Station Commander Brigadier Alfred Ndeblele commended the ‘good work done by his officers in handling this case so far’.
This is a developing story.
