ScottTheGirl never misses a beat
The local DJ shares on how music was introduced into her life and how it has become a passion of hers.
If you were to ask Zama Mthethwa what her greatest passion in life is, her response would truthfully, without pause, be deejaying.
Growing up, Mthethwa, whose stage name is ScottTheGirl, was surrounded by music as her grandmother was in a band and her mother loved playing soul-jazz music. Having been a DJ for the past five years, this was never a career path she thought she would follow but after she was gifted with a controller for her 27th birthday, she has never looked back and has been mixing ever since.
” Even though I have a full-time marketing job, deejaying is my passion and a huge part of my life. It’s what I enjoy so much and brings me such joy.”
Her love for music didn’t start with a song but with an extensive music catalogue compiled by producer, Martin Iverson. In her rhythmic career so far, her musical highlights include deejaying at the Red Bull Music Festival in 2018 where British rapper/producer, Skepta was a headline act, as well as deejaying at Bacardi Holiday Club. All this coupled with her ongoing in-store activations with Arc store, playing at the recent Fenty Launch has made following her passion one of her greatest decisions.
When speaking of her biggest hopes she said, “To grace the stages of huge electronic festivals, such as ADE in Amsterdam and Suncebeat Festival in Croatia.”
Her bold hopes do not blind her from the challenges she faces. As she is usually given opening sets, as she is the only female in the line-up, she finds herself having to prove herself repeatedly to be taken seriously as a DJ.
Through her work, ScottTheGirl hopes to inspire the next generation to stay unique and authentic to who they are, “The right doors will always open without having to conform.”
Should being a DJ be a goal of yours, her advice is to have fun with it as it will have you bring so much happiness and joy to others.
